LONG BEACH, CA – The Long Beach Coast (24-6) celebrated Father’s Day by clinging to a 6-2 victory over the Yuba-Sutter Freebirds (10-20) on Sunday afternoon. That win solidifies Long Beach’s fourth series sweep in its sixth-consecutive series win.
Second baseman Jacob Jablonski began the party at the plate with a leadoff home run in the second inning. First baseman Cuba Bess played the follow-up act by crushing an opposite field three-run blast in the next frame. When right fielder Matthew Bardowell slugged an RBI double to right field in the seventh inning, Bess tried to score from first behind pinch runner Jaylen Edmonds, but the relay ended in a tag out to keep the score at 5-2.
Starter Jack Martin kept the collective heart rate at Blair Field on the rise holding Yuba-Sutter without a hit for the first 5.1 innings. His only two hits allowed after that point produced both of the Freebirds runs.
Left-hander Jake Dixon cleaned up the finish to the sixth inning inheriting a run on one hit. Submariner Steven Ordorica followed him with 1.2 frames, shutting out the Y.S.F. bats, allowing one hit with a strikeout. Closer Zach Voelker entered the game in the eighth inning and slammed the door for his team-best fifth save of the year.
Martin’s third win moves him into a four-way tie for first place on the roster with right-handers Nick Bautista and Ricky Tibbett as well as southpaw Brett Wozniak. Dixon and Ordorica walk away with holds on the afternoon.
