O’Brien Tosses Gem, Shuts Out Mobiles in Sweep

LONG BEACH, CA – The Long Beach Coast (47-13) shut out the RedPocket Mobiles (13-47) in a pitcher-dominated 8-0 series finale to finish the sweep on Sunday afternoon.

Matthew O’Brien took the mound in the final Coast home game of July for his fourth start of the season, the previous two of which he hadn’t allowed a run in 13 combined innings. 

O’Brien did not allow a Mobiles baserunner to reach first in his first eight batters faced, and held a no-hitter through his first 14 batters, until Efrain Manzo snapped the streak with a double in the top of the fifth that would be the only on O’Brien’s Sunday line.

The Coast offense provided run support for their starter from the second through the fourth, scoring six runs off of Mobiles starter Agnel Miranda and early mid-reliever Ubaldo Romo, who entered the game in the middle of a Jacob Jablonski at-bat in the bottom of the third after an apparent injury from Miranda.

The Coast offense recorded some offensive highlights and milestones on Sunday in their series-high eight runs scored. Left fielder Eddy Pelc walked three times, extending his on-base streak to 60 games and breaking the all-time Pioneer Baseball League record for most walks in a single season (currently with 87) – the bar set at 86 by Evan Scavotto of the Grand Junction Jackalopes in 2025.

Coasters David Whittle and Benjamin Rosengard tallied their first multiple hit games in a Long Beach uniform as well, aiding the early rallies to keep the game’s momentum one-sided.

O’Brien (3-1) completed eight full innings, marking his longest professional outing. The UC Riverside product allowed no runs, no walks and one hit in 105 pitches, securing his third-consecutive series victory. O’Brien has not allowed a run in his past 21 innings on the mound after Sunday.

The 8-0 shutout is the sixth of the season for Long Beach, finishing out the final homestand of July with their ninth series sweep of 2026. 

The Sunday afternoon game at Blair Field also featured the second marketing player of the week. Seven-year MLB infielder Chase d’Arnaud started for the Coast in the top of the first, recording a 6-3 assist to start O’Brien’s day strong. The former big leaguer also handled an at-bat against Miranda and grounded out to the Mobiles second baseman Gianni Horvat on the first pitch.

The Coast will head east for the first time in their inaugural season, starting a six-game series in Ogden, Utah followed by another six-game series in Kalispell, Montana to play the Raptors and Range Riders, respectively.

The Raptors series will kick off on Tuesday night at Lindquist Field at 5:30 PM PDT. The Beach Ball Pregame Show will begin at 5:10 PM on the official Long Beach Coast YouTube channel.
